Once again, it looks like there`s yet another comp to hit the web that has a little controversy surrounding it already after a only measly 24 hours after going online..

Oh goody..

Regular readers of the blogging side of A4A will know I just love to get my teeth into certain remix competitions when things go a little awry with the promotion of it..Be it the prizes, stems, or regional restrictions ect.. And once again it looks like someone has thrown me a bone of contention to chew on, so time for the soapbox to come out methinks..

Top and bottom of it is that for the new comp for the Matisyahu track “Sunshine” there was previously an option to download the basic remix stems for the song (acapella & synths) AND an option to buy the advanced stem set for $10. Not anymore it seems.. Due to members of the site where the comp is being held having a little moan about paying for an advanced stems set..

I really cant believe the competitions host has now actually took down the advanced stems so no-one at all can now get them..what on earth are they thinking? OK, I get some of their members point(s) about paying for stems and paying for a membership of the site, and in all honesty it used to be my point of view too, but times dem a change.

In effect, the few whiners have now spoiled it for the rest of the remixing communitity who might actually want the advanced stem set of “Sunshine” and dont mind paying a few dollars for it. And now not to even put the advanced stems set up as a freebie with a slight explanation as to why, is just the icing on the cake..

Personally, I would like to see MORE advanced stem sets for sale like this er, was.. as an OPTION. It`s folly to listen to just a few people`s moans and disregard the opinions of others who might just have $10 floating around in there Paypal account looking for a good home.

Basically I think the site got it right first time round and got cold feet when the whiners spoke up. Even if there was an option to donate for the advanced stems pack, I`m sure a good percentage would do just that.. Admittedly $5 might have been more reasonable.. And from experience, I`m 100% sure at least some people wouldn`t mind coughing up a little dough for the possibility of a chunky 24 track stem set.. As Admin Annie just pointed out to me.. “Imagine if the advanced stems for David Guetta`s “Titanium” appeared” (legally lol), how many people would go out and instantly buy a copy of that..? Lots. And in that context I see no difference between Guetta & Matisyahu.. If you get my drift.. It`s all about the fans of the relevant artist..

I could go on about this subject for hours, and I know we`ve covered this ground before, but to summarise, being able to buy your favourite artist`s remix stems has to occur at some point in the future, and the sooner the better. There`s such a gaping hole in the music business market, and it cant stay that way for much longer surely?

If anybody did buy the advanced stems for “Sunshine” before the negative comments came raining down, please do send them in to us and I`ll post em up for everyone. I`ll even send you $10 back if you like..

Next up and worthy of a mention is the new comp for The Temper Trap with the song “Trembling Hands”.. As mentioned a few posts down their biggest hit to date “Sweet Disposition” is making a bit of a comeback in the UK charts, so great timing by their record company bringing out the new track right about now too. Not “my cup of tea” really either, but I`m sure some of you will be into this..

Once again it`s been quite a busy few days in the Remix Competition world, and that fact alone is a good enough excuse for me to put the blogging hat on again and review (plug?) the best of them, and I`m also tempted to review the worst.. but I think it best to leave the Daniel Beddingfield one alone in reality lol..

So, here goes with the best of the best, starting off with the recent comp held by Kimbra with a track called “Settle Down”.. Kimbra might ring a bell with you because she sang on the A4A plugged to death track from Gotye`s “Somebody That I Used To Know”.. and now she has a single out on her own-some and a remix competition to go with it.

As with the Gotye track, on first listen, this one doesn`t really do it for me either.. but, I have to be relatively impartial so that does not mean this track wont press your buttons and then maybe become a worldwide number 1 as well.. Best cover my bases ha..

After a quick check on the You-Tube page for this song, the 12 million plus hits that this video has received, should speak volumes.. but 12 million?? Has somebody been getting a little busy with a You-Tube counter there?? anyone`s guess on that !!

Anyways, the single is out now in North America and the album is due out in the UK/US May 22nd..

Funny that I mentioned about TV ads and Mash Ups a couple of posts down, because yesterday there was another instance broadcast on our screens (in the UK that is)..
This time round the ears pricked up when the ad for the new Ministry Of Sound Mash Up Mix 2012 (Bass) aired.. Looks like it`s that time of year then !!

If you are unaware there are a couple of guys who more than likely lock themselves away in a room for a year and don`t come out until they have produced yet another Mash Up Mix for the series they started way back when. Then, just before summer kicks in (usually), off go the masters to M.O.S and the Cut Up Boys [I`d bet] go get some well deserved fresh air and a some sun..probably in Ibiza.

The album is out now to buy, so if you do want this in your collection it can be bought from all the usual sources or you can go straight to the MOS shop and get a proper physical (CD) copy form there. Here`s the link to the shop:

Anyways, I got to thinking..Since Ministry are somewhat at the forefront of actually putting Mash-Up albums out (The Mash Up Mix Series has sold over a million copies worldwide), wouldn`t it be cool if MOS did a Mash-Up Mix competition !! I`m sure they`d be inundated with entries.. It would be a great PR stunt and helpful to the Mashing scene in general..Get the Cut Up Boys to do the judging and mix the album and all would be good.. Just a little food for thought and my 2 cents should the MOS boys read this.. ha.

Possibly one of the hottest rising stars right now in the business could well be a certain Ms. Rita Ora if you believe everything you read on the net or in magazines.. And there`s a few facts to back up the claim.. mainly being a some highly rated singles produced by some top producers, of which there has been a number one together with DJ Fresh “Hot Right Now” and now the new single “R.I.P”, which is set to go straight to the top of the UK charts come Sunday.. No US release date has been set for the single as yet that I could find but you just know it will happen sooner rather than later.. It probably will get released when “How We Do (Party)” has finished doing the rounds stateside..
Then there`s the album due out soon with a host of name collabs on there..

There`s already a few remixes of “R.I.P” floating round the net as well, including some by Seamus Haji & Gregor Salto, again some top bods in the industry, so you just know Rita has the backing of the people that matter.. as well as getting a bit of support too from A4A lol.. Only problem with those remixes is that they have had to timestretch a 144 bpm vocal down to 128 and that never sounds nice in reality.. Just my 2 cents..

All in all, things are looking very good for Rita Ora`s future and there`s even talk of Rita claiming Rihanna`s old crown.. we`ll wait and see on that one.

Anyways, we have the studio acapella up for some very timely remixes if anyone is interested..?

Keeping on with the TV theme, a prog called “The Voice” is getting aired in many countries of late and having quite an effect on the chart positions of the songs that are covered on it.. The latest one to have a resurgence is an evergreen A4A popular file from Temper Trap with the track “Sweet Disposition” which next week will land back in the UK top 40 again at number 15.. not a bad feat for a relatively old tune..

So, nothing wrong with a little re-post and a bump on the main page for it seeing as this is the case..

I`m going to combine a visit from the “fun police” and some news into one post here..
Earlier this month on UK TV we had a bit of a groundbreaking event.. a small but perfectly crafted clip of a mash up was aired to promote a radio station called “Magic FM”. You might think that is not exactly groundbreaking, but if you follow the news, and know about the laws being changed to allow such mash-ups being aired on TV, then it is, as copyright ect (meh) is obviously a big factor here.. never mind the ins and out of the PRS / MCPS / PPL and such..

Ok, so there has been a few TV ads promoting mashed up albums (MOS), but I can`t recall ever hearing a purpose made mash being used on telly advertisements before, though I could be wrong. Either way, it`s good to see that the powers that be have seen the light and allowed a bit of creativity to get aired, instead of playing it safe and just using a radio edit or TV track / Instrumental.

So yeah, looks like the door is open now for the TV/Radio boys to do whatever..long may this continue!

The mash up itself consisted of the backing track to Queen`s “I Want To Break Free” together with the vocal from Bruno Mars “Just The Way You Are”. Though the vocal was pitched down a little.. so I`ve included the pitched acapella (lossless) version in the pack together with all the Queen (lossless) stems.

Now, long time readers of the blog side of A4A will know I don`t mind turning my hand to a little mashing in my spare time, but since I haven`t got much spare time lately, I thought I`d throw this one out to our members to have a go at. At first glance (try out) it looks like it could be a bit of a challenge but the good news is that the tempo`s are very nearly, but not quite, the same.

Top and bottom of it is I would love to complete this project, but I`ve a feeling it would take just that bit more time and dedication than I actually have..

No surprise that some folk already have had a go at this, but at a guess only the instrumental was used and not the stems.. also, there`s no reason not to go the whole hog and redo the drums 2012 style, or write a different bassline to go under it all, maybe do a little sampling and looping and stretching.. the possibilities are endless.. You know the 2 tunes go, you`ve just got to make it your own !! And that`s before you get busy on the video..

Kelly Clarkson`s “Stronger” is still quite a strong track on both sides of the pond, and I dare say further afield too… The song is hanging in there in the top 10 Stateside, but it seems just about to fall out of the UK Charts pretty soon as it`s now lurking in the low 30`s.. either way that`s a good excuse as any for doing a little mashin` or remixin` and breathing a bit of new life in to the song..
